The Outer Barrier
The Outer Barrier

Five islands. One barrier.

The outer barrier is a string of barrier islands stretching seventy-five miles along Long Island's south shore. Each island has its own communities, its own weather, its own register. We document them one at a time.

  1. The flagship. A real city, two villages and hamlets, and the only island on the barrier with a live experience surface.

  2. Jones Beach Island Planned

State park, ocean, and a long quiet ribbon between the inlets. Coming to the barrier in a later season.

  3. Fire Island Planned

Carless hamlets, the Sunken Forest, the lighthouse. Documented for a future season.

  4. Westhampton Island Planned

Dune Road, the eastern tip of the barrier, where the ocean turns toward Shinnecock.

  5. Barnum Island Planned

A small island in Hempstead Bay, north of the outer barrier proper. Part of the same lagoon system.
